Danièle Huillet / Jean-Marie Straub Pieter Schoolwerth Portrait of ‘Esau Selling His Birthright’ with Candle (after Ter Brugghen) A two-part exhibition featuring a film by Pedro Costa, and a new painting by Pieter Schoolwerth. The underlying intention is to present and confront, without comment, two intensely engaging, yet sharply different attitudes towards adapting pre-existing literary and art historical material. Pedro Costa’s film apprehends Straub and Huillet in the process of editing Sicilia!, their adaptation of Elio Vittorini’s novel Conversazione in Sicilia (Conversations in Sicily, 1937-1938), while Pieter Schoolwerth’s painting transforms Esau Selling His Birthright (1627) by a leading member of the Dutch Caravaggisti from Utrecht.http://www.miguelabreugallery.com/index.htmshapeimage_31_link_0

Jeonju International Film Festival (Festival Director: MIN Byung-lock) has long introduced a number of masters’ works through retrospectives, such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Glauber Rocha, Somai Shinji, Ritwik Ghatak, Peter Watkins, Bela Tarr, Jerzy Skolimowski. By offering a rare opportunity to experience a wide range of films from various regions and works of cineastes to Korean audience, JIFF’s retrospectives have been well received as one of core programmes representing the vision and spirit of JIFF. This year, the 11th JIFF, held from April 29 to May 7, will be dedicating a complete retrospective (sponsored by the Embassy of Portugal in Korea and Instituto Camões) to Pedro Costa, a Portuguese filmmaker who is being considered as one of the greatest cineastes in the contemporary cinema world. Along with introducing works of Pedro Costa, JIFF will be exhibiting a video installation consisting of unused clips out of In Vanda’s Room and Colossal Youth at the Gallery in Jeonju Cinema Complex. Furthermore, JIFF will publish a special publication “The Cinema World of Pedro Costa” (working title) in both Korean and English with full precious reviews and essays from world-renowned film critics, such as Jonathan Rosenbaum, Hasumi Shigehiko, Tag Gallagher, James Quandt, Mark Peranson and Chris Fujiwara, and from world class directors like Aoyama shinji, John Gianvito, Suwa Nobuhiro and Tom Anderson. In addition, during the festival, there will be a cine-talk event and Q&A sessions with Pedro Costa, a party and more.
